The Town of Brookline’s Health and Human Services Department is seeking a Community Health Education Specialist to develop and deliver health education programs that serve our vibrant community. In this dynamic role, you will take the lead on planning, implementing, and evaluating various health education initiatives while ensuring that programs are accessible to all ages and abilities.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Implementation:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate community-based health education programs addressing priority health issues such as chronic disease prevention, mental health, substance use prevention, maternal and child health, nutrition, and physical activity.
  • Tailor programs to meet the specific needs of different populations, including youth, seniors, underserved communities, and other vulnerable groups.
  • Engage community members in the development of health programs to ensure they are culturally relevant, accessible, and meet the needs of the target population.

Community Collaboration

  • Work with local agencies, schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations to expand the reach of prevention programs.
  • Foster collaboration with local schools, businesses, healthcare providers, public safety, faith-based organizations, and governmental agencies to enhance the effectiveness of public health programs.
  • Participate in health-related community coalitions and advisory boards to promote collective action and community-wide health improvements.

Marketing & Outreach

  • Create, produce, and distribute materials about public health initiatives and programs using social media platforms, print press, community billboards, and local cable.
  • Coordinate and conduct presentations to residents, students, public organizations, and others.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, health education, social work, community health, psychology, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in health education, program development, or public health outreach (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or other relevant certifications preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of substance use prevention strategies, public health principles, and social determinants of health.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in using Canva, Excel, and other relevant computer programs.

Work Environment

  • Typical business office conditions in a busy, fast-paced environment.
  • Frequent evening meetings and community programs requiring travel and exposure to varied weather conditions.
  • Frequent contact with other town departments, Brookline Public Schools students and staff, town residents, local business leaders, community groups, healthcare professionals, and clergy.
